The South Korean government is considering extending its “Sovereign AI Core GPU Security” program, with a budget of up to approximately 4 trillion won for next year.
Svmuu News: The South Korean government is considering extending its support program to ensure access to GPUs, a core resource for AI. On July 7, according to industry sources, the Ministry of Science and ICT is assessing the capacity of major South Korean cloud service providers to deploy additional GPUs, with the goal of extending the “Project to Strengthen the Infrastructure for AI Computing Resource Utilization.”The core of this project involves the government using its budget to purchase GPUs, deploying them in cloud service providers’ data centers, and making them available to industry, academia, and research institutions. Last year, the South Korean government allocated a budget of approximately 1 trillion won, and this year it has allocated 2 trillion won to secure more than 20,000 GPUs.The project was originally scheduled to end this year, but due to surging demand for advanced resources such as the next-generation GPU “Vera Rubin” from NVIDIA, the South Korean government is formulating comprehensive measures, including optimizing data center efficiency and securing new space. It is also reported to have applied to the Planning and Budget Office for a “special supplementary budget” to support GPU supply.Industry estimates suggest that, considering this year’s GPU procurement budget and the government’s commitment, next year’s budget could reach as high as approximately 4 trillion won.Industry observers note that, compared to GPU supply itself, “equipment installation space” will be the key to the project’s success or failure, as running thousands of high-performance GPUs simultaneously requires massive power supplies and advanced cooling systems, while the equipment installation space available to South Korean companies is already nearing saturation.
