The ultimate form of this would be the elimination of the binary division between humans and machines, opening up various positions along this spectrum.
Vitalik hopes that deeply integrated humans and machines will outperform humans and machines operating in isolation, continuing to do so until the limits of technology are reached. The AI outcomes he envisions for the distant future include: the preservation of global political and economic pluralism, with no single company or government dominating; humans having the option to undergo technological upgrades to explore the universe on a par with pure machines, or to maintain the status quo and navigate the world through robots that follow instructions; much of Earth potentially becoming highly regulated nature reserves, where people can continue their current lifestyles while venturing into space for more radical endeavors;
AI itself may become too powerful compared to other alternatives; a particular nation or company might gain a decisive advantage and permanently lock in that position; powerful technological capabilities could cause incalculable harm; and the path of human-machine fusion itself may fail to preserve sufficient humanity, ultimately amounting to nothing more than another way to create powerful robots. Therefore, he hopes to navigate this narrow passage at a slower pace and supports proposals to decelerate or pause progress, including ideas such as mutually assured destruction of computing power that could provide an opportunity to hit the brakes.
Vitalik stated that his ideal world is one where open weights prevail, and that Dean Ball’s assessment—that open weights have a deceleration effect by curbing capital expenditures on cutting-edge models—is entirely correct, even though this would drive more capital expenditures toward peripheral devices and applications. This would allow for deceleration without resorting to harsher political measures. However, he believes we should not rely on the world naturally conforming to convenient economic and physical laws; humans still possess a degree of agency over political dynamics, and there are many ways to alter incentives without allowing a single authority to take control—and these methods should be utilized.
