Svmuu News: As the correlation between the South Korean stock market and U.S. tech stocks continues to strengthen, global fund managers are viewing the South Korean market as a leading indicator of AI investment sentiment. Monitoring the performance of South Korean tech stocks such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix before the market opens has become the new norm in the industry.
Data shows that the 60-day correlation coefficient between the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) and the Nasdaq 100 Index has risen to 0.46, approaching its highest level in the past two years and roughly three times the five-year average of 0.16.Particularly during market downturns, the sensitivity of the Nasdaqs to the performance of South Korean stocks has increased significantly, with the correlation reaching its highest level since 1990 on the 7th of this month.
Driven by market concerns over the outlook for AI demand, the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) plummeted nearly 9% at one point on the 13th of this month, causing SK Hynix ADRs to fall more than 9% and dragging down the U.S. semiconductor sector as a whole. JPMorgan Chase Representatives from asset management firms and institutions such as PineBridge noted that global investors now use the South Korean market to gauge risk appetite in the AI sector, even continuing to track the performance of SK Hynix ADRs and related ETFs after the South Korean market closes.
Ivan Feinseth, Chief Investment Officer at Tigris Financial Partners, said that the South Korean market, along with the Nasdaq and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, has become a key barometer of global tech stock volatility, with Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and the KOSPI serving as “pre-market indicators” of risk appetite in the U.S. AI and semiconductor markets.
However, since its June high, the KOSPI has fallen 25% in cumulative terms, with market capitalization evaporating by approximately $1 trillion; both Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have seen their stock prices drop more than 30% from their peaks. Leveraged trading has amplified market volatility, making the South Korean stock market one of the most volatile among major global stock indices.(Bloomberg)
The correlation between the Korean stock market and Nasdaq Composite is nearing a two-year high, making it a barometer of global AI investment sentiment
