Svmuu News: The two-year-long Anthropic book copyright class-action lawsuit has officially come to an end, with a U.S. federal judge approving a $1.5 billion settlement—setting a record for the largest known copyright settlement in the United States.
Previously, the court ruled that Anthropic’s use of books to train the Claude model constituted fair use, but its downloading and storage of more than 7 million pirated books still constituted copyright infringement.
Currently, more than 91% of the affected authors and publishers have filed claims for compensation. Some rights holders have opted out of the settlement and will continue to pursue Anthropic’s liability in other lawsuits. This case has also become the first major case involving AI training and copyright in the U.S. to complete the trial, ruling, and settlement processes.
