Lacking independent security verification, the first phase of the Bank of Korea’s CBDC pilot relies solely on self-assessments by participating banks
Svmuu News: According to data from the Financial Supervisory Service of South Korea, during the first phase of the CBDC pilot project led by the Bank of Korea, financial authorities did not conduct any independent security verification; instead, participating banks were solely responsible for conducting their own preliminary security reviews.Prior to the project’s launch, participating banks were required to conduct only a self-assessment of IT vulnerabilities, which was jointly carried out by the Financial Security Institute, SK Shields, and self-inspection teams from Woori Bank and Nonghyup Bank, resulting in an “assessment model where the regulated entities inspect themselves.”In its pilot results report, the Bank of Korea acknowledged external concerns regarding the security of the deposit token Binance and responded that the preliminary reviews were sufficient; however, critics pointed out that this explanation constituted a self-assessment rather than independent third-party verification.
