Svmuu News: Julian Schrittwieser, a member of the Anthropic engineering team, recently posted on social media, poking fun at the shift in attitude toward “open source” among some tech giants in recent years. He expressed his hope that NVIDIA and Microsoft would further open up their core technologies, stating: “It’s great to see Jensen Huang become a supporter of open source, and I look forward to the open-source release of CUDA and GPU drivers; I also look forward to Satya Nadella’s support for open source and hope to see Windows and Microsoft Office open-sourced in the future.”
Julian Schrittwiese also addressed external speculation regarding his opposition to open weight models, stating that such interpretations are inaccurate. He believes that open models can actually play an important role in many scenarios. However, Schrittwiese noted that it is interesting to observe that some companies, which in the past had long maintained a very cautious or even opposed stance toward open source, are now rapidly shifting toward supporting an open ecosystem.
In recent years, as competition in artificial intelligence has intensified, open-source models, open weights, and developer ecosystems have become key competitive battlegrounds in the tech industry. Companies such as NVIDIA and Microsoft have continuously emphasized their support for open ecosystems, but the definition of “open” remains controversial within the industry—some companies open their model interfaces, toolchains, or ecosystems, while keeping their core commercial assets closed-source.
Julian Schrittwiese’s remarks have also sparked discussion, with the focus centered on whether the “selective open-source” approach promoted by tech giants represents true openness or is merely a new competitive strategy for the ecosystem.
