US Social Security Fairness Act Repeals WEP and GPO, Restoring Benefits for Millions
The US Social Security Fairness Act, signed into law in January 2025, repealed the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). This change, retroactive to benefits payable from January 2024, restored Social Security benefits for approximately 2.7 million retirees and surviving spouses. The repeal primarily benefits public sector workers like teachers, police, and firefighters who had careers split between jobs covered and not covered by Social Security. Previously, WEP reduced benefits for those receiving a pension from non-Social Security-covered work, while GPO similarly reduced spousal and survivor benefits.
