Bain Capital will acquire global bubble tea chain Gong cha, after rival MBK Partners pulled out of the bidding due to South Korean regulatory pressure.
Bain Capital announced on Thursday that it has agreed to acquire Gong cha from U.S. private equity firm TA Associates. Previously, MBK Partners, one of Asia's largest private equity firms, had also participated in the bidding but ultimately withdrew due to regulatory scrutiny and pressure from its portfolio company Homeplus, which was on the brink of bankruptcy in South Korea, making it difficult for MBK to complete the transaction independently.
