Colombia's Foreign Ministry announced on Monday its recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, citing Israel's right to protect itself against external threats. This move, made just days after far-right President Abelardo de la Espriella took office, makes Colombia only the second country, after the United States, to formally recognize Israel's 1981 annexation of the territory. The United Nations continues to recognize the region as part of Syria.
