Meta disclosed on August 13 that it has deleted 756,000 accounts believed to belong to Australian teenagers under the age of 16 since the nationwide ban on social media use for young people came into effect on December 10 last year. These accounts include 462,000 Instagram accounts and 294,000 Facebook accounts, deleted between December last year and June this year. This figure is significantly higher than the 331,000 Instagram accounts and 173,000 Facebook accounts Meta reported in January. Australia's internet regulator is weighing legal action against platforms that do not adequately comply with the ban.
