The U.S. and Canada are close to a trade deal to avoid Donald Trump's new 50% tariffs on about $20 billion in Canadian goods, with a deadline of Saturday morning ET.
Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc said the two sides were "very close" to reaching a deal. Donald Trump had previously postponed tariffs, originally set to take effect on Wednesday, by three days. If no agreement is reached, 50% tariffs on goods including hockey sticks and wine will take effect at 00:01 ET on Saturday. Sticking points in the negotiations include Donald Trump's previous tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and lumber, which Donald Trump has hinted he might reduce, and the possible revival of the Keystone XL oil pipeline project.
