German intelligence services stated that a weapons cache discovered last year in a forest near Berlin is believed to have been intended for Russian assassination missions. German federal prosecutors are investigating a suspect in Romania on suspicion of espionage and "preparing serious acts of violence threatening the state."

Germany's domestic intelligence agency found the cache, containing two handguns and ammunition, last October. German media reported that the cache was intended to facilitate targeted killings by Moscow. German security services suspect the weapons and ammunition were for an attack. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the cache was monitored for several months after the weapons were rendered inoperable, but no one approached it.
