California State Senator Aisha Wahab wins special election, overcoming millions in funding from pro-Israel groups.
According to media reports, California State Senator Aisha Wahab won the special election for California's 14th congressional district, defeating her moderate Democratic opponent Melissa Hernandez. Pro-Israel groups, including United Democracy Project, which is associated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), poured nearly $2.5 million into the race in its later stages, while another group, BOLD America, also spent $1.9 million to support Hernandez. Wahab will become the first Afghan American member of the U.S. Congress.
