U.S. Trade Representative Greer announced that due to Canada's refusal to finalize a trade agreement by the deadline, the United States imposed a 50% tariff on certain Canadian goods on August 22. Canadian Prime Minister Carney responded by stating that the harsh terms proposed by the U.S. undermined national sovereignty and core industries, and Canada would impose equivalent retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion worth of U.S. goods, effective September 8.
