Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated on Tuesday that the new seven-mile (11.3km) wide transit corridor's entry and part of its exit would pass through Iranian territorial waters. However, Gharibabadi insisted that the waterway would not fully reopen until the United States fulfills its commitments under an interim peace deal signed in June. The agreement follows weeks of on-and-off talks between the two coastal nations regarding traffic control through the strategic strait, which previously handled one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.
