Meta Platforms is in out-of-court settlement talks with attorneys general from 29 states regarding a lawsuit alleging the company intentionally designed Facebook and Instagram to be addictive for teenagers, Bloomberg reported. The lawsuit, now in its second week of trial, seeks financial penalties and court orders to change how Meta Platforms operates. Meta internally estimates that a loss could result in fines of up to approximately $1.4 trillion, close to its total market capitalization, while a settlement amount would likely be much lower. At the core of the case are allegations that Meta violated state consumer protection statutes and the federal Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.
