OpenAI's head of data centers, Chris Malone, has left the company, marking the latest in a series of executive departures from the AI lab this year. Malone joined OpenAI in March 2025, having previously held data center-related roles at Meta and Google. His departure comes as OpenAI embarks on a massive infrastructure expansion, with plans to invest approximately $600 billion in computing infrastructure by 2030. OpenAI stated that the company recently restructured its infrastructure division to support the scale and pace of its work, and affirmed that it has a strong data center team. According to TechCrunch, Malone's reporting relationship had shifted from OpenAI President Greg Brockman to Vice President Sachin Katti. Previously, Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser, Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap, Head of Product and Business Fidji Simo, and Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch have also successively departed. OpenAI President Greg Brockman downplayed the impact of the departures, stating that they are not unusual, but rather due to the company's high profile. OpenAI is preparing for an IPO in 2027 and is striving to justify its $852 billion valuation.
