BioCryst Pharmaceuticals Achieves Profitability, Eyes Acquisitions of Rare Disease Drugs
BioCryst CEO Charlie Gayer stated that the company achieved profitability last year and expects to be more profitable this year and next. Its rare disease drug Orladeyo, approved by the FDA in 2020, has generated over $2 billion in sales, with an estimated $645 million for this year alone. Driven by this success, BioCryst's shares have risen approximately 25% year-to-date. The company plans to expand its rare disease pipeline through external acquisitions, targeting drugs with peak sales potential of around $300 million, a strategy that differs from large pharmaceutical companies typically seeking multi-billion dollar blockbusters.
