A survey of 1,000 prospective homebuyers commissioned by Neighbors Bank found that most homebuyers could not accurately state current interest rate levels. Forecasts from institutions such as Fannie Mae and the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) indicate that 30-year fixed mortgage rates may not return to the low levels homebuyers expect in the coming years. For example, Fannie Mae projects an average rate of 6.4% for the remainder of 2026, dropping to 6.3% in 2027; the MBA, on the other hand, forecasts rates of 6.5% for the third and fourth quarters and for the full year of 2027.
