Some of the world's largest music publishers, including subsidiaries of Sony Music and Warner Music, filed a lawsuit last Friday evening in a California federal court against AI company Anthropic, its CEO Dario Amodei, and co-founder Benjamin Mann. They accuse Anthropic of large-scale illegal scraping and downloading of thousands of copyrighted musical works to develop and operate its "Claude" series of AI models, demanding hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages per infringed work. Anthropic previously reached the largest copyright settlement in US history with authors and publishers in September 2025, totaling $1.5 billion.
