A court in Quito found Moreno, who served as president from 2017 to 2021, and 19 others guilty of taking bribes from Chinese state-owned firm Sinohydro to secure a contract for the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric plant. Moreno, 73, will serve his sentence under house arrest due to age and disability, and plans to appeal. Prosecutors alleged Sinohydro paid $76.1 million through shell companies, with Moreno's family members receiving tens of thousands of dollars. Moreno is the third former Ecuadorian leader to be sentenced for corruption.
