Russia says its forces helped repel Niger's attempted coup on Saturday
Russia's foreign ministry stated on Sunday that servicemen of its African Corps assisted Nigerien forces in thwarting an attack by soldiers on a key military airbase and the presidential palace in the capital, Niamey. Nigerien authorities confirmed the rebellion was contained hours after explosions and gunfire were heard early Saturday morning. Russia added it would continue to support Niger in its fight against "extremists."
