Nuclear energy company X-Energy joins the "Project Prometheus" led by NVIDIA, Amazon, and others, to accelerate reactor design using AI.
X-Energy, which went public in April this year, became a founding member of Project Prometheus in July, a project led by Idaho National Laboratory, NVIDIA, and Amazon. The project received $60 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, with X-Energy contributing $10 million of its own funds and proprietary data. The aim is to integrate advanced AI models into reactor design, regulatory documentation, manufacturing, construction, fuel fabrication, and semi-autonomous operations. X-Energy's main product is the 80-megawatt small modular reactor Xe-100, and it has partnered with companies such as Dow Chemical, Amazon, and Centrica in the UK. The company's project pipeline includes 144 reactors, totaling approximately 11.5 gigawatts of potential capacity. Additionally, X-Energy is building the TRISO-X fuel fabrication facility, which is expected to be the first commercial TRISO fuel production facility in the United States. Although X-Energy is not yet profitable, its Q2 revenue and grant income increased by 154% year-over-year to $54.6 million, and it boasts $1.9 billion in total liquidity with no debt. Analysts believe X-Energy is a high-risk nuclear energy growth stock rather than a traditional energy investment, and the Motley Fool analyst team has not listed it among their top 10 stocks currently.
