Investment management firm Andvari Associates warned that NVIDIA's investment in OpenAI in late 2025 highlights the risks of circular financing in the AI sector, drawing parallels to the dot-com bubble of the 1990s.
Andvari Associates noted in its Q2 2026 investor letter that most of NVIDIA's investment in OpenAI will be used to lease NVIDIA chips. The firm also observed that some AI companies are using special purpose vehicles (SPVs) to borrow money to purchase chips, and then using those chips as collateral to obtain loans to buy more chips, deeming this behavior similar to that of tech companies during the dot-com bubble.
