The US Marshals Service sold Anthropic shares, confiscated from former FTX executives Caroline Ellison and Nishad Singh, during 2025. This move caused the government to miss out on an estimated $4.7 billion in gains, as Anthropic's valuation surged from $61.5 billion in March 2025 to $183 billion six months later, and further to $965 billion by May 2026. Analysts now value the forfeited stake between $2.6 billion and $5 billion, highlighting the significant opportunity cost. FTX's estate had also made a comparable early exit, selling two-thirds of its Anthropic position for $884 million in March 2024.
