According to an August 31 report by The Wall Street Journal, AI startup Anthropic has signed a $3.5 billion cloud computing agreement with Lambda, a cloud service provider backed by NVIDIA, with NVIDIA itself holding the leases for the relevant data centers. This marks Anthropic's second multi-billion dollar computing power deal this year, following a $4.5 billion agreement with Nscale, bringing the total to $8 billion. Analysts believe that NVIDIA's move extends its influence from hardware sales to the capital and commercial arrangements of the AI infrastructure ecosystem. By holding data center leases, NVIDIA provides credit endorsement for non-investment-grade credit companies like Anthropic to acquire large-scale computing power. Additionally, Bitcoin miner Hut 8, as a data center developer, is providing infrastructure services for both the NVIDIA camp and Anthropic projects under the Google TPU ecosystem in this transaction, becoming a "dual-line beneficiary" in the AI computing power arms race.
