US July JOLTS job openings rose to 7.27 million, falling short of market expectations for the second consecutive month.
U.S. job openings rose to 7.27 million in July, up from a downwardly revised 7.18 million in June, but slightly below market expectations of 7.31 million, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed on Tuesday. Notably, the June figure was significantly revised down by nearly 200,000, marking the largest negative revision since 2025. Layoffs fell to their lowest level since January this year, while hiring and quits also showed weakness, indicating a lack of dynamism in the labor market but no substantial deterioration yet. There were approximately 1.1 job openings for every unemployed person, close to the historically normal range, a metric often cited by Federal Reserve officials to assess the balance of labor supply and demand. The August non-farm payrolls report, due this Friday, will provide further insights.
