The U.S. military completed a new round of strikes against multiple targets in Iran, including air defense, communications, and radar systems, on Tuesday evening ET, in retaliation for recent Iranian attacks on merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and on U.S. forces stationed in Jordan. Previously, Iran had attacked a U.S. military base in Jordan on Monday ET. The Jordanian Armed Forces stated that their air defense systems intercepted 10 of the 13 missiles launched by Iran. Bahrain's Ministry of Interior also issued a potential threat alert early Wednesday local time.
As a result, international benchmark Brent crude oil prices rose 4.5% to $94.52 per barrel on Tuesday, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose about 5% to $90.03 per barrel, both reaching new highs since July 24, and continued to rise during Wednesday's Asian trading session. U.S. President Donald Trump described the strikes as "massive and powerful" on social media and threatened further military action if Iran retaliated.
