OpenAI Product Lead Tara Seshan on the "Third Era" of AI: Agents Will Become Long-Term Collaborative Colleagues, Corporate Competition Shifts to "Who Can Steer Better"
Tara Seshan, Product Lead for OpenAI Codex and ChatGPT Work, stated in a podcast released on August 30 that AI products are moving from the chatbot and agent phase towards a "third era of continuously working AI colleagues." She believes that AI colleagues will be able to work independently, with humans providing feedback, and both synchronizing at different paces. This shift will transform knowledge work from "rowing" to "steering," where humans are responsible for setting direction, judging outcomes, and correcting course. In the future, the focus of corporate competition will no longer be on "can it be done," but rather on judgment, taste, and ambition.
