Canada's first GE Vernova Hitachi small modular reactor is expected to be completed by the end of 2029, at an estimated cost of $5.5 billion.
In the small modular reactor (SMR) sector, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) in Canada has begun construction of the first GE Vernova Hitachi SMR at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station in 2025. The first 300 MW reactor for this project is expected to be completed by the end of 2029 and is planned to commence commercial operation by the end of 2030, with an estimated cost of approximately $5.5 billion. If successful, this would be the first commercially operational SMR in the Western world.
