Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday that an agreement to end the war between Russia and Ukraine is possible. Concurrently, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Sybiha announced that peace talks are expected to see new developments. The rare synchronized optimistic statements from both sides quickly squeezed the Black Sea geopolitical risk premium factored into international grain prices. As a result, the benchmark wheat futures contract on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) fell over 4% at one point, ultimately closing down 2.8%. This marks one of the few instances of synchronized optimistic statements from high-level officials on both sides regarding the prospects for peace since their last meeting in February this year. However, neither side provided specific reasons for the progress in the peace process, and hostilities on the battlefield continue. Putin, instead, accused Ukraine's recent attacks on civilian merchant ships of posing an obstacle to peace negotiations.
