Ghana requires local refining for certain gold exports starting September 1 to retain more value at home
The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) issued a directive on August 24, effective September 1, barring Self-Financing Aggregators (SFAs) from exporting gold dore unless it is first refined in Ghana. This move, implementing the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025, aims to capture margins historically lost to overseas processors and aligns with President John Mahama's vision for value-added natural resource exports by 2030. Ghana's gold export earnings reached approximately $20 billion in 2025, nearly double the $10.3 billion recorded in 2024.
