Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell by as much as 239 points in early Monday trading due to concerns over US interest rate hikes and rising oil prices.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index opened Monday morning up 2 points (0.01%) at 25652 points before quickly turning lower, falling by as much as 239 points in early trading. The Hang Seng Tech Index opened down 11 points (0.26%) at 4558 points, and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index fell 6 points (0.08%) to 8548 points. Asian stock markets opened mixed, as a strong US jobs report was seen as positive for global growth but also intensified market concerns about the Federal Reserve raising interest rates. Meanwhile, oil prices rose after the US and Iran attacked ships in the Gulf region, with Brent crude up 0.2% to $96.45/barrel and US crude up 0.4% to $91.85/barrel, further pushing up inflation expectations. The market widely expects the European Central Bank to raise interest rates to 2.75% on Thursday, and the futures market also suggests a 75% probability that the Federal Reserve will raise rates again to 3% by December.
