OpenAI CFO: AI Hashrate Investment is Like "Building Railroads"; Hashrate Equipment Purchased a Year Ago Can Now Be Sold for 3 to 5 Times the Original Price
In a podcast interview on September 10, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar likened the massive capital expenditure on current AI hashrate infrastructure to "building railroads" before the birth of the internet. She noted that while initial investments are huge, AI hashrate assets have strong value preservation and appreciation capabilities, with hashrate equipment she purchased a year ago now selling for 3 to 5 times its original price on the market. She also mentioned that customers' willingness to pay has fundamentally reversed, as businesses believe the output of AI tools far exceeds their cost.
