The cost of hiring an oil tanker on the industry’s benchmark trade route reached $1.035 million a day on Monday, according to data from the Baltic Exchange in London. This marks the first time the daily hire rate has exceeded $1 million, as the ongoing Iran war has led to a shortage of ships willing to cross the Strait of Hormuz to collect cargoes.
