Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke: Most companies are misusing AI; machines cannot take responsibility. The most valuable skills in the future will be "taste and judgment."
Shopify founder and CEO Tobi Lütke recently stated in a podcast that the vast majority of businesses treat AI as a tool to avoid thinking, blindly accumulate, and shirk responsibility, rather than as leverage to provide multi-dimensional perspectives, test reasoning, and spark creativity. He emphasized that machines cannot bear responsibility; only humans can bear the ultimate consequences. Lütke also revealed that Shopify's internal AI, "River," can already automatically generate about 50% of code submissions, and believes that as machine capabilities become widespread, humanity's most important scarce assets will revert to taste and judgment.
