Diogo Almeida, a former OpenAI researcher and co-inventor of ChatGPT, has launched Jev, a new transformer-based AI model from his startup TypeSafe AI. Jev, which does not output text but rather probabilities, is designed for software automation, offering a significantly cheaper and faster alternative to large language models (LLMs) in certain use cases. Developers have shown strong interest, with some reporting Jev to be 5 to 18 times faster and more accurate than OpenAI's Luna 5.6 for classification tasks, and 10 to 20 times cheaper than Gemini for similar functions.
