The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Friday amended rules, mandating caller ID and call management apps like Truecaller to send user spam reports they collect to a blockchain platform maintained by telecom operators. TRAI stated that the move aims to expand the spam report pool to more effectively combat spammers. However, Swedish company Truecaller opposed the move, calling it a "one-way exchange" and "anti-competitive," arguing that it would transfer commercially valuable proprietary assets to telecom operators. India is Truecaller's largest market, with over 350 million monthly active users. Additionally, the new rules will bring automated calls, including AI voice agents, under the application-to-person (A2P) framework, requiring relevant companies to declare them to operators in advance, otherwise they will be considered spam.
