According to a Reuters report on September 22, South Korea has confirmed that the gas-fired power plant is the first project under the trade agreement finalized with the United States last November. With an installed capacity of 6.3 gigawatts, the electricity generated will primarily supply local AI data centers and chip factories. The South Korean government stated that the relevant investment still requires approval from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) and further negotiations with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, with the final announcement to be made by U.S. President Donald Trump. Additionally, South Korea is engaged in further discussions with the U.S. on nuclear power and liquefied natural gas projects, and is considering acquiring a 5% to 10% stake in Westinghouse. South Korean President Lee Jae-myung stated last Friday that ensuring the project's "commercial reasonableness" has become one of the main points of contention in current negotiations. South Korea is seeking to keep annual investment in the U.S. below $20 billion to alleviate pressure on the Korean won exchange rate from large-scale capital outflows.
