Coinbase's Head of Crypto, Yehuda Lindell, stated that the exchange is designing its custody solution to be adaptable to any post-quantum signature scheme Bitcoin may adopt in the future. It is currently unclear which post-quantum signature scheme Bitcoin will actually use. Lindell noted that since different networks may eventually adopt different standards, Coinbase must be prepared for various outcomes. The company custodies approximately $250 billion in assets for institutions like BlackRock and is preparing for a post-quantum era where multi-party computation (MPC) might face challenges. If Bitcoin adopts a post-quantum scheme incompatible with MPC, Coinbase is exploring an alternative architecture centered around programmable hardware security modules (HSMs). Lindell emphasized that Coinbase's custody architecture is designed to be agnostic and adaptable to any signature scheme Bitcoin might choose in the coming years.
