British Columbia sues OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman over mass shooting, alleging failure to alert authorities to threats on ChatGPT
The Canadian province of British Columbia filed a lawsuit in a US federal court on September 21 against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman. The lawsuit alleges OpenAI failed to notify authorities about concerning user interactions on ChatGPT ahead of a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, Canada, in February, which killed eight people. It accuses OpenAI of "aiding and abetting a mass shooting" and product defect liability, seeking financial compensation for recovery efforts and a court order to revamp OpenAI's threat identification policies. Victims' families had previously filed about 30 similar lawsuits. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has apologized for not alerting law enforcement, stating the content did not meet the threshold for referral at the time.
