Iranians are stocking up on food and medicines as fears grow that the country will face dire shortages due to tightening US sanctions and a naval blockade. The Iranian government had managed to keep household staples flowing during the early months of the war, but the US actions have led to concerns about import limitations. Last week, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned Washington for its blockade, stating it would prevent essential supplies from reaching the Iranian people. On Saturday, US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s offer for a seven-day truce that included reopening the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for economic relief. The war is now in its eighth month, with hopes for a diplomatic solution dimming. The weakening Iranian rial has also contributed to daily price increases, prompting some grocers to bulk-buy goods and ration sales. The blockade has also worsened medicine shortages, with some pharmacies running out of infant formula and other medications.
