Britain's MI5 issued a rare public espionage alert on Wednesday, accusing China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI) of funding academic research at UK universities to enhance the espionage capabilities of China's Ministry of State Security (MSS). MI5 stated that CGTRI targeted over 100 UK academics working in fields such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. UK Security Minister Tom Tugendhat has written to all university leaders, urging staff to cease cooperation with CGTRI, or potentially face prosecution under the UK National Security Act passed in 2023. The Chinese Embassy in London called the warning "completely fabricated and constitutes malicious slander."
