SpaceX today launched a satellite carrying Google AI chips, advancing the vision of space-based data centers.
SpaceX plans to launch a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California at 11:15 AM ET (Pacific Time) on Thursday, carrying Google's Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) chips into orbit. These chips will be onboard Planet Labs' satellites as the first in-orbit test for Alphabet's "Project Suncatcher," which aims to explore the feasibility of establishing scalable, solar-powered machine learning infrastructure in space. SpaceX has previously promoted space supercomputers as the "next frontier" for AI infrastructure, arguing that the "infinite space" in orbit can solve problems faced by ground-based data centers.
