Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune confirmed in excerpts from an interview broadcast on Saturday that his country sent fighter jets to Niger in late August to help thwart a coup attempt in the capital, Niamey. Algeria's Ministry of Defence had previously stated on August 30 that it deployed four Sukhoi Su-30 aircraft and an air-to-air refuelling plane at the request of Nigerien authorities to support the Nigerien army. Niger's military government last month accused France of orchestrating the failed mutiny, an accusation France denied.
