Al Jazeera: Russia faces €18.7 billion nuclear plant decommissioning funding gap
According to Al Jazeera, Russia's Rosenergoatom plans to decommission 35 reactors, with an estimated total cost of approximately €21 billion, but faces a funding shortfall of about €18.7 billion. The report highlights that Russia is postponing the most costly stages of decommissioning, transferring the financial and technical burden into the future. Environmental NGO Bellona Foundation, citing Rosatom's projections, states that by around 2037, Rosatom's decommissioning and remediation obligations could exceed its net profit. Russia also inherited 774,000 cubic metres of radioactive waste from the Soviet Union, with an additional 800,000 cubic metres expected from upcoming decommissioning.
