Senior executives from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and Meta are scheduled to testify under oath at a New York City Council hearing on Monday at 11 AM ET to discuss the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. This hearing is a rare "full committee" meeting, with all 51 council members expected to attend. City Council Speaker Julie Menin stated that these companies will be asked to explain the threats posed by AI and offer opinions on potential legislative solutions. This comes after top AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic have faced increasing scrutiny over their safety and security practices, with researchers warning that these companies are racing to build models that could cause catastrophic harm. According to Menin's office on Monday, Anthropic will send Logan Graham, its Head of Frontier Red Teaming, to testify, while OpenAI will be represented by Morgan Dwyer, Head of Policy Development and Operations. Alice Friend, Google's Director of AI and Emerging Technology Policy, and Shane Cahill, Meta's Director of AI Legislative Policy, will also be present. Menin said that Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google only agreed to attend after the City Council threatened to issue subpoenas. The City Council last week issued a subpoena to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, demanding that he or another representative from SpaceX AI testify.
