Former German spy chief arrested on charges of espionage and treason
The German Federal Prosecutor's Office announced that August Hanning, former head of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND), has been arrested on suspicion of espionage, treason, and obtaining classified information for a foreign power. Prosecutors accuse Hanning of using classified intelligence to draft analyses for one foreign intelligence agency and maintaining close contact with another foreign spy agency. Also arrested was former BND employee Manfred D, who is accused of providing Hanning with approximately 2,000 classified documents in exchange for payment. Investigators have not yet disclosed the foreign powers involved. Hanning is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, and Manfred D on Tuesday.
