French AI company Mistral on Tuesday released its trillion-parameter AI model called Mistral Large 4 (ML4), also known as "le Chonk." The company stated that ML4 is a top performer among global open-source models, particularly excelling in cybersecurity, coding, manufacturing, finance, and multimodal tasks, with its performance "significantly surpassing" all open-source models outside of China. Mistral completed a €3 billion (approximately $3.4 billion) Series D funding round in September, reaching a valuation of €21 billion, making it one of Europe's highest-valued AI startups. The ML4 model was trained for two months on 4,000 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs, and a preview version has been launched for developers, cybersecurity leaders, and government agencies, with a broader release planned for later this month.
