On October 6, Eastern Time, U.S. Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal sent a letter to Trump administration officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, demanding an explanation of whether tech giants influenced the government's AI regulatory policies through lobbying, and to disclose the specifics of the relevant regulatory framework and testing mechanisms. The two senators directly stated in the letter that the Trump administration was "catering to the interests of large tech company CEOs" rather than addressing the safety and national security risks posed by AI systems. They cited media reports, pointing out that the mandatory assessment plan for AI models drafted by the government in May was changed to a voluntary mechanism after opposition from executives at companies such as Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI. The testing window was also shortened from 90 days to 30 days, and it was ultimately incorporated into Executive Order 14409, signed in June. The senators demanded that the government disclose by October 19 all meetings, communications, and different draft versions between tech companies and government officials regarding the executive order.
